Artist Statement

To create these pieces, I worked with a variety of mixed media such as wire, plaster-cast, wood, beeswax and acrylic paint. They all subtly depict how human life is tied to nature. More so, how humans rely on every aspect of it without realising so. I thought that if all of my pieces had an element related to nature, the viewers would then hopefully see this pattern and realise its deeper meaning. For example, creating a fish sculpture by using everyday man made items as well as incorporating real bees in the wax sculpture of the man. In a way, some of these pieces quite literally show this coexistence and harmony between humans and nature. In relation to the theme of the exhibition, rebirth, my pieces help raise questions about what life on Earth would be like in the future especially since we are responsible for all the damage that has been done to the planet. Will wildlife further evolve and adapt to our ways? Can everyone learn to appreciate all that nature has given to us and help conserve it? What new ways of living will emerge as a result of our mistakes?
