Artist Statement

I believe that my artwork fits this year’s exhibition theme quite well. Rebirth. Coming to terms with my surroundings, environment, history and culture. In other words, appreciating where I’m from. Lower 6 was my new beginning, in that I learnt from my past mistakes in my Form 5 year. For these pieces, my vision was to bring forward whatever I felt connected to and interested in with my country, Trinidad and Tobago. My previous work was a terrible representation of myself. I solely created pieces that associated with anything random and with no deeper meaning. However, I trust that my most recent work truly depicts my hard and thoughtful work process. I delved  into Trinidad’s history and culture to inspire me to create these pieces and I used new media, as well as mine and others’ photography. Additionally, I always try to keep my work associated with persons or humans, even if they are as small as an ant in the artwork. I feel as though humans are the most important part of Trinidad’s history. We are the reason why Trinidad is how it is today. In conclusion, I hope the audience can feel a sense of home and belonging or familiarity within my artwork and they can feel the rich culture that Trinidad and Tobago has to offer.
