Dana-Marie Parris

Artist Statement

My name is Dana-Marie Parris, I am a young artist inspired by everything and everyone around me, telling stories through people and places. I mainly use the media of acrylics, graphite, charcoal and sometimes ink but I do want to expand my knowledge with these and other more “unconventional” media. My hope is for my art to show people the hidden beauty I see in everything. Hopefully this will stir in some to see life and people in a new light. I want my art to always be honest and something that reflects my inner thoughts. I create because I love to, however it was not always so. In my earlier days I created because people said I was good at it. This was not a good drive for an artist. In fact I have stopped creating art before as there was no real inner desire to create anymore. I’ve learnt that I don't particularly want to know if I have gotten any better or worse from someone else other than myself as an artist. Art is subjective. I create art as a therapeutic medium for myself but also as an advocating medium for others who have no voice. My intent is meaning over beauty, process over perfection, reality over the marred concept we have of this beautiful life. As an artist, every piece we do takes something of ourselves inside each brush stroke and line. I wonder, are you willing to see who I am in my work?
